EuLaViBar

The European Language Vitality Barometer (EuLaViBar) is a tool for assessing the maintenance of a minority language. The EuLaViBar consists of four main devices: (1) a systematic method of data collection with a large-scale questionnaire survey, (2) a system for operationalising the survey results in regards to language maintenance or loss, (3) a calculation formula for analysing the survey data and (4) a polar diagram representing the results of the analyses in a graphic form.

The EuLaViBar Toolkit, containing a revised version of the ELDIA questionnaire, templates and explanations of the statistical method, can be downloaded from the PHAIDRA repository (https://phaidra.univie.ac.at/o:301101).

The most important results of ELDIA are described in the monograph Towards Openly Multilingual Policies and Practices: Assessing Minority Language Maintenance across Europe (2016), written by Johanna Laakso, Anneli Sarhimaa, Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark and Reetta Toivanen.

The ELDIA case study on Karelian in Finland was one of the central sources for Anneli Sarhimaa’s book Vaietut ja vaiennetut: Karjalankieliset karjalaiset Suomessa (Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura, 2017), a comprehensive account on the history of Karelian speakers in Finland.

 

Studies in European Language Diversity

The series includes

  • summaries of the context analyses for each target community, summing up the state of knowledge around 2010 (in English);
  • legal and institutional framework analyses for each target community (in English);
  • Dangers and Developments: On Language Diversity in a Changing World, a collection of papers based on the open conference organized by ELDIA in 2013;
  • case-specific reports, presenting the results of each case study and also including summaries of the context analysis, the legal and institutional framework analysis and the media analysis. In addition to the English-language reports, summaries were translated into both the minority language at issue and the majority language of the country.
